GREENFIELD FOUNDER AND BUSINESSMAN PLEDGES $250,000 TO NEW LIBRARY Foundation Announces Ulice Payne to Chair New Library Fundraising Committee
Ronald Tays, president of the Greenfield Public Library Foundation, and Ulice Payne Jr., Greenfield resident and President of Addison-Clifton, LLC., announced today the Foundation has received a major pledge for the new library in the amount of $250,000 from the ROS Foundation. Robert O. Schlytter, director of the ROS Foundation, is a local businessman, former alderman and a founding member of the incorporation of the City of Greenfield 50 years ago. The Foundation also announced that Ulice Payne, Jr. will chair the Foundation’s capital fundraising campaign for the new library. In making the pledge, Schlytter said, “In my opinion, there is no better place to learn and study information than in a public Library… By making this gift I am doing a small part to ensure this resource, a resource that enriches lives, is available for future generations.” Others on hand to honor the pledge were Schlytter’s son Robert B. Schlytter , Greenfield Mayor Michael Neitzke, Alderperson Shirley Saryan, Director of the Department of Neighborhood Services Richard Sokol, President of Continental Savings Bank Jim Podewils, and Library Director Sheila O’Brien.

Schlytter, Library Director Sheila O'Brien, Fundraising Campaign Committee member Jim Podewils, and Mayor Michael Neitzke Mayor Neitzke thanked Schlytter saying “This is the largest single donation ever to any City project. Your generosity and exemplary support of this project will improve the quality of life for residents of all ages in Greenfield. Greenfield’s undersized library currently serves patrons located throughout the county-wide library system. I’m confident that our fundraising campaign will be supported by community leaders from throughout the metropolitan area. Our new library will demonstrate to our children and their children that education and opportunity are indeed priorities for Greenfield.” “Mr. Schlytter cares deeply about this community and its future. He is a man who supports Greenfield not only with his words, but with his actions. On behalf of all of the City residents, I want to thank Mr. Schlytter for helping make the dream of a new library, one that truly meets the needs of our community, that much closer to reality," noted Mayor Michael Neitzke. "What a way to kick-off our fund-raising effort!" Last month, the Greenfield Common Council voted to approve a $3,000,000 budget allocation to build the new library, to be built in 2008 at 5310 W. Layton Avenue, across from Konkel Park. The new Greenfield Public Library will cover more than 30,000 square feet, considerably larger and closer to design standards for a community the size of Greenfield. “Construction of the new library is expected to begin in the spring of 2008. It will involve substantial renovation to the old Police Department facility” said Director of Neighborhood Services, Richard Sokol. This year, Dan Jansen Family Fest, Inc. contributed upwards of $100,000 towards the installation of a new fountain in Bicentennial Park that will grace the front of the new library home.
